A COMPARISON Ltween the incidence of the enteric gr~up ~f {nfections and bacillary ,dyse~tery duriug the recent war evidences in a striking manner the effects bf prophylactic vaccination against the former group of . Jiseases. The occu!rrence of enteric infections almost disappeared, and the severity of those c~ses which did occur was much diminished. . On the other hand, bacillar~ dysentery was widespread' on every front, and in the. dosing years of t~elc~mpaign constituted a serious cause o! wasta~e of man power. In certaIn! ll1stahces attempts were made to HUmUnIZe small numbers of men Hy means of . prophylactic inoculation, but very little I.' , success attended any of the measures employed. This failure to {ltoduce immunity may have beeu in part due to the fact that bacilla,ry dyseJtery is not, as a rule, associated with a general blood infectii)n, as in the1case of the enteric group of diseases, but the' chief difficulty was the i~mpossibility of inoculating sufficiently large doses. of vaccine owing to th$, severity of the reactions produced. , It is evident, thJrefore, that if any method can be devised which will diminish the toxic properties of the bacillus without affecting its antigenic 17 ' " I I I

Studies on vaccination against bacillary dysentery. 4. Oral immunization with live monotypic and combined vaccines.
Results of tests made in 1964 confirm the previous findings that live oral vaccine, prepared from streptomycin-dependent strains of shigellae, confers a strong, type-specific protection against acute bacillary dysentery. This vaccine did not reduce the carrier rate of shigellae. Observations on soldiers treated with a vaccine of Shigella flexneri serotypes 2a and 3 combined revealed no antagoni...
متن کاملHigh Mean Water Vapour Pressure Promotes the Transmission of Bacillary Dysentery
Bacillary dysentery is an infectious disease caused by Shigella dysenteriae, which has a seasonal distribution. External environmental factors, including climate, play a significant role in its transmission. This paper identifies climate-related risk factors and their role in bacillary dysentery transmission. Harbin, in northeast China, with a temperate climate, and Quzhou, in southern China, w...
متن کاملInvestigating the effects of climate variations on bacillary dysentery incidence in northeast China using ridge regression and hierarchical cluster analysis
BACKGROUND The effects of climate variations on bacillary dysentery incidence have gained more recent concern. However, the multi-collinearity among meteorological factors affects the accuracy of correlation with bacillary dysentery incidence. METHODS As a remedy, a modified method to combine ridge regression and hierarchical cluster analysis was proposed for investigating the effects of clim...
متن کاملSTUDIES ON THE FLEXNER GROUP OF DYSENTERY BACILLI IlL ANTIBODY RESPONSE IN MAN FOLLOWING THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE SPECIFIC ANTIGEN OF TYPE V SHIGELLA PARADYSENTERIAE (FLEXNER)* BY ELY
The prophylactic immunization of man against bacillary dysentery has proved to be a difficult problem. The severe reactions evoked by the toxic microorganisms used in vaccines (1, 2), the multiplicity of bacterial types encountered in the disease, and the difficulties experienced in evaluating the efficacy of vaccines are all factors which have impeded progress in the control of the disease by ...
متن کاملSeparation and Identification of Four New Compounds with Antibacterial Activity from Portulaca oleracea L.
The Portulaca oleracea L. (P. oleracea) has been used to treat bacillary dysentery for thousands of years in China. Pharmacology studies on P. oleracea have also showed its significant antibacterial effects on the enteropathogenic bacteria, which might reveal the treatment of P. oleracea in cases of bacillary dysentery to some extent. To date, however, the therapeutic basis of P. oleracea treat...
